When the UK was put into lockdown, our Milford Haven site was selected as a HUB setting for key worker families. Our fantastic staff agreed to work and put themselves at risk and so our journey began. We were scared…very scared, but it turned out to be a wonderful summer.
With just 4 children in week 1 we progressed to care for 48 children of key workers and opened daily from 7am to 7pm including the bank holidays. We had a scare in Week 3 with a confirmed case of Covid 19 in one of our children, but thankfully no other family or staff contracted the disease.
Over the weeks we grew in numbers and practice changed daily. At first it was all ages together and we were outside all day, then we started to form bubbles and finally, returned to our normal operation with full staff attendance. Hygiene measures and Covid regulations were put into place and now are simply part of our everyday routines. We did lots of work with the children about ‘the nasty bug’ and reassured them they were safe.
We celebrated Easter, VE Day and Colonel Tom’s Birthday. We received gifts from Staff on Furlough, parents, Dominoes Pizza and our local Ice Cream van.
We continued to communicate with our families at home through videos of staff, ideas for activities and inviting them to share their pictures with us. Eventually we were able to invite our families back and welcomed them with great excitement.
Here are just a small selection of the children who spent their summer with us
